What the Right Will Point Out

I'm sure the right will point to this passage, but ignore the part in italics:

* The Iraq conflict has become the "cause celebre" for jihadists, breeding a deep resentment of US involvement in the Muslim world and cultivating supporters for the global jihadist movement. Should jihadists leaving Iraq perceive themselves, and be perceived, to have failed, we judge fewer fighters will be inspired to carry on the fight.

So we're fucked if we do, fucked if we don't. I can understand this idea, and it's tough to say that we should immediately withdraw with this in mind.

The Jihadists will not lose inspiration because of perceived or real failure. Failure will, in fact, inspire even more fighters.

damn. that is an interesting point. and another mind-fuck.

so we can't win either way because we won't win the spin angle. either we 'failed,' so they are 'emboldened,' or the 'evil empire has grown larger' so they need to 'buckle down.'

hmm. maybe we should stay out of other countries' business as much as possible. and, say, not have bases in countries that don't want them (saudi arabia).

The US military occupation is the major inspiration of and recruiting tool for the Jihadists.
